MULTI GRADE FILTER (MGF)

A Component of Pharmaceutical Purified Water system for manufacturing of Drug substance and drug products.

What is Multi Grade Filter (MGF)?

This is Known as Sand Filtration. Multi Grade Filter consists of vertical or horizontal pressure sand filters that contain multiple layers of coarse and fine sand (pebbles and gravels) in a fixed proportion.

What is Purpose of Multi Grade Filter (MGF) usage?

MGF is being used for filtration process of water. Objective to perform this operation in the water purification process is to remove of suspended solids and turbidity in the water. This will remove macro level particles.

Water is working Principle of MGF?

  • MGF system works on higher specific flow rates. It is also a low cost pre-treatment system for ion exchangers (deionizer and softener) and membrane systems such as reverse osmosis etc. 

  • MGF works on the principle of pressure and flow of water. In a multi grade filter or pressure sand filter, water is passed through multi layers of filter media consisting graded sand, pebbles and gravels layers.

  • The contaminants in the water are captured in the media bed and filtered water passes into the discharge manifold at the bottom of the tanks.

Effectiveness of Multi Grade Filter (MGF)?

MGF is working properly on its efficiency is being monitored with the inlet and out let pressure measurement and monitoring.

This pressure is water system capacity dependent so, level of pressure need to define in the respective procedure. In case if it is differing from the acceptable level of pressure than backwash is required to perform.

Backwashing, a process of effectively removal of captured contaminants from the media bed. After back-washing the filter is rinsed with raw water and after the required quality of water is achieved the filter is put back into service.
